Even in this COVID-19 pandemic crisis, reports show that cybercrimes have increased more than 30% because of an abrupt surge in online transactions, to be contact-free due to fear of Coronavirus. Cyber-criminals are hyperactive now and you may be duped, if ignorant. Online transaction is convenient but you have to be more cautious. Here are 7 tips which may protect your money.
- Always use private browsing like the incognito mode on Google Chrome which doesn’t save passwords or create history and it clears all the cookies and cache data from your devices.
- Always be sure about the correct address of the bank website and look for the green ‘‘lock’’ icon on the browser’s status bar while visiting your bank’s website or conducting an online transaction. Always be sure ‘‘https://’’appears in the website’s address bar before making an online transaction. The ‘‘s’’ stands for ‘‘secure’’ and indicates that the communication with the webpage is encrypted. If there is any yellow or red color icon, never attempt an online transaction as it might make your information vulnerable.
- There may be malware and viruses in your device that can make a log of what you type on your keyboard (username/ password). So it’s advisable to use a virtual keyboard when doing an online transaction. Banks have an option for a virtual keyboard on their login pages. Use it.
- Always remember to log off from your online banking portal/ website after completing an online transaction with your credit/ debit card and delete browsing data of your web browser (Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, etc.) after completing your online banking activity.
- Always track your online transaction by viewing your bank account activity regularly. Report any discrepancies in your account to your bank immediately.
- Keep your bank’s customer care number handy so that you can report any suspicious or unauthorized transactions on your account immediately.
- Register your personal mobile phone number with your bank to link it to your account. The Bank system will send notifications on every transaction. Always review these notifications from the bank and report for any suspicious transaction/ unsuccessful login attempts to your net-banking account.
