How safe is using Public free WiFi network

Nowadays almost all telecom operators are offering 4G/5G speed and attractive plans with unlimited data usage at high speed, in spite of that, some of us are very much passionate about for searching a free WiFi network so that browsing can be done on an even faster speed. But at the same time, we forget that using a public WiFi network is like inviting cyber-criminals to hack our device and personnel data.

Even many of us don’t care to connect WiFi networks at Railway Stations, Airports,  Hotels, Shopping Malls, Restaurants, Coffee shops, etc, which are more riskier places, and even feel proud to utilize free services.

Be cautious, cyber-criminal may sit at these crowed place like restaurants, coffee shop, etc, keeping enabled his phone’s hotspot with the same name as the restaurant/ coffee shop, is offering free WiFi network and the ignorant innocent “freebie lover” may get in a trap by connecting cyber-criminals WiFi.

Study shows that more than 65% of Wifi users know that using public Wi-Fi is riskier but even though people are not practicing safe security habits of using public Wi-Fi.

Man-in-the-middle (MITM) attack, Packet sniffing, shoulder sniffing etc are some technical jargon by which cyber-criminals can intercept your Wifi traffic and can steal personnel information, contacts including passwords and financial data.

If you still need to use a free Public WiFi network, secure your data by following tips

  1. Configure and Turn off Sharing. Remember that cyber-criminals are very clever, so it is better to surf and play smart.
  2. Use a VPN (Virtual Private Network), which is the most secure option to surf on public networks. Paid VPN services are safer than free VPN, choice is yours.
