Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) in India has been facing challenges for quite a long time, almost more than a decade. BSNL, once a monopoly and the market leader in the telecommunications sector, has lost its market share to private operators in recent years, mostly to Jio and Airtel. How Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are Key to Reviving India’s Telecom Giant, BSNL. Even its legacy landline market share has been decreasing very fast and Broadband market share has been captured by private telecom operators as well as many regional cable operators. The company has been facing financial difficulties due to a decline in revenue and an increase in competition, leading to a decline in its market share.

The Indian government has taken various steps to revive the company, including infusing capital, reducing its debt, and implementing reforms. However, these measures have yet to bring about a significant improvement in the company’s financial performance.

Despite these challenges, BSNL remains an important player in the telecommunications sector in India and continues to provide essential services to millions of customers across the country. The Indian government and the company’s management are taking steps to revitalize the company and regain its market share.

Just a few days ago, I came across some interesting articles about A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) and, more precisely, the recent development known as ChatGPT.

ChatGPT, (OpenAI)  “is an AI chatbot system that OpenAI released in November 2022 to show off and test what a very large, powerful AI system can accomplish. You can ask it countless questions and often will get an answer that’s useful.” 

Realizing that I’m not an expert in everything related to technology, I choose to try this out.  I asked the simple question, “What is the state of the BSNL in India, and How AI or ML can help BSNL to compete with Jio and Airtel and improve customer experience?”  It took about two seconds to get a 500+ word response which is shown below. 

To revive BSNL and increase its market share, the following steps can be taken:

  4. Embracing digitalization: BSNL can implement digital technologies such as automation, Artificial Intelligence, and big data analytics to streamline operations, improve customer experience and reduce costs.
  5. Collaborating with other players: BSNL can forge partnerships with technology companies, content providers, popular OTT platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, Sonylive, etc, and other players to expand its offerings and reach new customer segments.
  6. Improving financial performance: BSNL can focus on reducing costs, improving operational efficiency, and increasing revenue through better financial management.
