Last updated on May 15th, 2023 at 12:30 am

The IMEI number of your mobile phone is significant so whenever you buy a new phone either keep the packaging box safe or note down 15 digits IMEI number immediately in your diary. The stolen phone can only be blocked by using this IMEI only.

The increasing incidences of theft of mobile phones or snatching of mobile phones have also raised concerns about the misuse of mobile phones and your mobile number so you have to block both mobile numbers as well as the usage of mobile phone devices.

How to block stolen mobile phones yourself

So as soon as you come to know about your stolen phone, first of all, lodge a report with the police and get a copy of the report from the police.

Now, to deactivate the mobile phone number, you must immediately contact your mobile service provider and make a request to them to deactivate the SIM and issue you a new duplicate SIM.

Now visit the following page of the Central Equipment Identity Registry (CEIR) and fill up all details

https://www.ceir.gov.in/Request/CeirUserBlockRequestDirect.jsp

The information required to block the mobile phone device is the IMEI of the device, if you have a dual SIM phone, then you have to fill up two IMEI numbers of your device.

You have to fill up the brand of your mobile phone, model and lost place, etc., and attach documents about your identity.

After submitting the form, you will be given a Request ID which can be used for checking the status of your request and for unblocking the IMEI in the future.

Update: Starting from 17 May 2023, subscribers will be able to lodge complaints on the new system on the CEIR portal and also track their lost phones themselves.

The main goals of CEIR are to make it easier to report lost and stolen mobile phones and to restrict their use nationwide. This will prevent mobile phone theft, make it possible for the police to track down stolen and lost devices, enable the detection of cloned or counterfeit devices, restrict the use of such cloned devices, and protect consumer interests by informing them about fake and cloned mobile phone information.

Apple already has a mechanism in place that uses Apple ID to locate missing smartphones. For Android users, the new system may be a gamechanger.
