Hey there, mobile enthusiasts! AT&T Prepaid has just launched a new wireless prepaid plan on us, and it’s causing quite a stir. But here’s the kicker – it’s like a blast from the past with a 3Mbps speed cap. Yup, you heard that right!
So, what’s the deal? This new plan is priced at $50/month, or you can snag it for $40/month with autopay billing. The package includes the whole shebang – unlimited talk, text, and data. But here’s the twist – for the first 30GB of data in a monthly billing cycle, you’re cruising at a 3Mbps speed limit. After you hit that 30GB mark, buckle up because the speed drops even further to 1.5Mbps.
But wait, there’s more! This plan throws in some international flair with talk, text, and data usage in Mexico and Canada. Plus, you get international texting to over 230 countries. Just keep in mind, that data usage in Canada is capped at 25GB per billing cycle before the speeds take a hit down to 512Kbps.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting – no hotspot use allowed, and video content won’t be streaming any faster than 2Mbps. And here’s the kicker – this plan is strictly for the lone wolves out there; you can’t add it to multiline accounts. Taxes and fees? Yeah, they’re extra.
Now, what’s raising eyebrows is that AT&T had a similar plan back in the day through Cricket Wireless. They had a promotional two-line deal in July 2017, offering unlimited data with a 3Mbps speed cap for $80. Following that, in September 2017, they launched a regular rate card plan at $55/month or $50/month with autopay, again with that 3Mbps speed cap. The Cricket plan stuck around for almost three years, calling it quits in July 2020.
Here’s the head-scratcher – why bring back a plan that’s been there, done that? Some might call it unimaginative, especially at the $50 price point. It makes you wonder – was it a hit with subscribers back then? If it was retired in 2020, what’s the play bringing it back now?
Many folks argue this plan would make more sense if the price took a nosedive. There’s fierce competition out there with other plans offering way more bang for your buck. And in a 5G world where speeds are off the charts, a 3Mbps speed cap might feel a bit dated.
So, here’s the big question – would you go for it? Or do you think AT&T Prepaid needs to up its game, maybe boost the speed cap to 5-10Mbps, and drop the price to a cool $20/month? Sound off in the comments below – we want to hear your take on this throwback plan!
