Airtel added 3 times more customers versus Jio in January-2021 TRAI Report

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released telecom subscription data for the month of January-2021 which shows that Airtel added three times wireless customers as compared to its competitor Jio and Vodafone-Idea (Vi). The Govt owned PSU BSNL and Vi has shown net customers in positive after a gap of many months.

Wireless Customers

The biggest gainer again is Airtel with 58.92 lakh net wireless customers and Vodafone-Idea (Vi) has also gained 1.7 lakh customers after losing many months. Jio couldn’t add even half of the customers as compared to December-2020. The details of Wireless customers of all four major telecom service providers are as follows.

Jio added net wireless customers = 1.96 lakh
Airtel added net wireless customers = 58.92 lakh
BSNL added net wireless customers = 84000
Vi added net wireless customers = 1.7 lakh

The report is active mobile customers v/s total customers also improved for Airtel in January-2021. See the numbers and notice that half of BSNL customers are not active but almost all numbers of Airtel are active.

Jio has active wireless customers = 79.01%
Airtel has active wireless customers = 97.44%
BSNL has active wireless customers = 51.69%
Vi has active wireless customers = 89.63%

Wireline Customers

BSNL again lost a major portion of its wireline customers while Jio added maximum customers. Vi also lost 11600 customers. The details of Wireline customers of these telecom service providers are as follows.

Jio added net wireline customers =1.96 lakh
Airtel added net wireline customers = 0.77 lakh
BSNL lost net wireline customers = -2.14 lakh
Vi lost net wireline customers = -11600

Internet Customers

The Broadband services are growing very fast and all TSPs have the following numbers of total broadband customers which include their landline, FTTH, and mobile customers.

Jio has total Broadband customers =412.98 million
Airtel has total Broadband customers = 184.64 million
BSNL has total Broadband customers = 26.67 million
Vi has total Broadband customers = 122.72 million

The Wired line Broadband services offer higher download speed. Jio added more Broadband customers while BSNL lost few customers. All TSPs have the following numbers of wireline on copper or fiber broadband customers.

Jio has total Broadband customers =2.25 million
Airtel has total Broadband customers = 2.90 million
BSNL has total Broadband customers = 7.69 million

Cable Operators Broadband Customers

Other than major TSPs, many cable operators have Broadband customers on fiber/ cable or wi-fi and ACT is continuously adding new customers by offering affordable and competitive tariff plans. The details of their customers are as follows.

ACT Fibernet has total Broadband customers =1.80 million
Hathway has total Broadband customers = 1.06 million
Tikona has total Broadband customers = 0.31 million

It is clear from the report that state PSUs, BSNL is losing its customer base continuously in wireless and Broadband customers in spite of introducing attractive plans while Jio and Airtel are clear gainers. Even the other ISPs ACT, Hathway, etc are able to add more customers to their customer base using broadband.
